2024 RN Renewal Information

Renewals begin on September 1, 2024, and must be completed by October 31, 2024. If not completed by this date, your RN license will lapse, and you won't be able to practice as a Registered Nurse in WV until you reinstate your license.

Continuing Education
  • Renewing RNs need to complete 12 hours of continuing education (CE) from a Board-approved provider per renewal cycle.
  • Newly-licensed RNs only need 3 hours of CE on safe prescribing and drug diversion, completed within 1 year of receiving your initial license.

APRNs with RN license:
If you have a West Virginia APRN license and a prerequisite WV RN license, then you will be required to renew your WV RN license as well. The RN renewal fee will be waived for active WV APRNs who have a WV RN license.

Update - New License Expiration Date and Deadlines
HB 4110 took effect in May of 2024 and directs the RN Board to change our license expiration and renewal end dates to June 30. As a result:

    • This Year: When you renew your RN license, it will expire on June 30, 2026.
    • Future Renewals: Starting in 2026, renewals will begin on May 1 and end on June 30, with renewed licenses expiring on June 30, 2028.

Information regarding the $20 fee for WV Restore/Nurse Health Programs:
The legislature passed a bill in 2002 that enacted the Impaired Nurse Treatment Program.  Ten years later, WV Restore was created, allowing for a confidential recovery path for nurses who voluntarily entered the program. The Board will never know about the individual who signs and completes their contract. The management of this program is outsourced by the board, which permits confidentiality.  The RN is responsible for all costs associated with participation in the program.  This includes the cost of treatment, random drug screening, evaluations, and other expenses related to their contract with Restore.

Since June 2013, the legislature has enacted a $15.00 license renewal fee annually to support the cost of programs associated with all Nurse Health Programs (WVRestore, Nurse Health Coach classes, and Care for Nurses Support Groups). Last year, the legislature approved a reduction in the fee to $20.00 ($10.00 annually) every other year. While WV Restore is for specific nurses, Nurse Health Coaching and Care for Nurses Support Groups are available to any WV RN.
