Do I need to renew my RN license in 2026?
Please use the following decision tree to see if you need to renew your West Virginia RN license in 2026.
I am an RN:
- Living in West Virginia: Log in to your Nurse Portal and complete your renewal between May 1 and June 30.
- Living in another Compact State with a Multistate License in that state: DO NOT renew your WV license. You may choose to let it lapse or manually Inactivate it via your Nurse Portal.
- Living in another Compact State with a WV Single-State License: If you have a single-state RN license in your home state then you may keep your single-state West Virginia RN license, with a few caveats: If you ever obtain a multistate license in your home state then you will need to place your West Virginia single-state license on Inactive status. Additionally, if your West Virginia single-state license lapses or is placed in an inactive or retired status, and you want to reinstate your license, you will be required to obtain a multi-state license in your home state, unless you do not qualify for one under the Uniform Licensure Requirements (ULRs).
- Moving Soon (or Recently Moved): You must notify the Board of your change in residency. Once you obtain a multistate license in your new home state, please log in to your WV Nurse Portal and manually Inactivate your WV license.
I am an APRN:
- Living in WV and hold both a WV RN and APRN License: Log in to your Nurse Portal to renew your RN license. Your RN renewal fee is waived because you hold an active WV APRN license, but the application must still be submitted.
- I hold a Multistate RN License from another Compact state: DO NOT renew your WV RN license. You may let it lapse or manually Inactivate it in your Nurse Portal. You must notify the APRN License Coordinator of your residency and licensure change via the Nurse Portal or by email at APRN@wv.gov.
- Living in another Compact state but hold a WV Single-State RN License: If you have a single-state RN license in your home state then you may keep your single-state West Virginia RN license, with a few caveats: If you ever obtain a multistate license in your home state then you will need to notify us of the change at aprn@wv.gov or via your nurse portal with the topic APRN. You will then need to place your West Virginia single-state license on Inactive status. Additionally, if your West Virginia single-state license lapses or is placed in an inactive or retired status, and you want to reinstate your license, you will be required to obtain a multi-state license in your home state, unless you do not qualify for one under the Uniform Licensure Requirements (ULRs).
- Living in another Compact state but do NOT qualify for a multistate license there: If you wish to keep your WV license, you must provide documentation to the Board explaining why you do not meet the Uniform Licensure Requirements (ULRs). In this case, you must renew your WV RN license by June 30.
- I am Moving Soon (or Recently Moved) to another Compact state: Notify the Board of your residency change via the Nurse Portal or at APRN@wv.gov. Once you have obtained your new multistate license and have notified the Board of your change, log in to the WV Nurse Portal and manually Inactivate your WV RN license.
While your APRN license remains active until June 30, 2027, you must take action regarding your prerequisite RN license by June 30, 2026, or your APRN license could lapse.
