Registered Nurse License Renewal Continuing Education Requirements​

Pursuant to the West Virginia Legislative Code of Rule WV 19 CSR 11:

  • R​​egistered nurses are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education during each 2 (two) year license renewal cycle from an approved CE provider. RN license renewal occurs every other year in even years. The current RN cycle started 11-1-2022 and ends 10-31-2024,​ the current RN license expiration date.​

Per WV Code 30-1-7a, each person licensed to practice registered professional nursing must:

  • complete 3 contact hours of CE for drug diversion training, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist if they prescribe, administer or dispense controlled substances within 1 year of receiving his or her initial license from the Board.

  • Per WV Code 30-1-7a et.seq., the annual drug diversion training, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist and the mental health conditions common to veterans and their families CE is no longer required.
You will need to create an exemption request document, sign and date it, then scan and upload it to your CE Broker account to request a CE waiver request via your CE Broker account if you were initially licensed and did not administer, prescribe or dispense controlled substances within 1 year of receiving your initial license from the Board . Example text you can use to create that document is as follows:

I request a waiver of the best prescribing drug diversion training continuing education because I did not prescribe, administer or dispense controlled substances within 1 year of receiving my initial  RN license from the Board.

CE Broker

    The CE Broker Support Center is open Monday - Friday, 8am - 8pm EST to assist with CE reporting or questions about your basic CE Broker account. If you signed up for an upgraded account by mistake contact CE Broker support center for a refund. The support center contact is as follows:

    • Licensees can also reach support via email at support@cebroker.com , emails are typically answered within 4 hours.
    • An online chat option is accessible and available when you are logged into your CE Broker account.

    Advanced Practice License Renewal CE Requirements

    Pursuant to WV19CSR7 advanced practice registered nurses license renewal requirements, each APRN must complete 24 contact hours of CE, 12 contact hours in pharmacotherapeutics and 12 hours in clinical management, within each 2 year license renewal cycle. 

    Pursuant to WV Code 30-1-7a each person licensed to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse shall:
    • complete 3 contact hours initially of CE for drug diversion training, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist if they prescribe, administer or dispense controlled substances, within one year of receiving his or her initial license from the Board.
    • Per WV Code 30-1-7a et. seq., the annual drug diversion training, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist and the mental health conditions common to veterans and their families CE is no longer required.

    How to Request an Exemption for Best Prescribing CE​

    Note: Even if you request a waiver to the best prescribing and drug diversion CE for your APRN license renewal requirements, pursuant to WV Code 30-1-7a and code of legislative rule 19CSR07 advanced practice registered nurse licensure requirements, you will need to complete 12 contact hours of continuing education each renewal period of pharmacotherapeutics and 12 contact hours of clinical management.

    Specific Board guidelines include the following:

    1. An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) must complete 12 hours of pharmacotherapeutics (i.e. advanced pharmacology), and 12 hours of clinical management practice (i.e. advanced assessment, diagnoses, outcome identification, planning, intervention, and/or evaluation, etc.) from a Board approved CE provider each license renewal period pursuant to WV19CSR7 (i.e. June 30 every other year in odd years).
    2. An APRN must complete 3 contact hours of CE for drug diversion training, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist if they prescribe, administer or dispense controlled substances, within one year of receiving his or her initial license from the Board.
    3. An APRN license renewal period begins on July 1st of an odd year and ends on June 30 of a subsequent or next odd year. 
    4. APRN license CE requirements begin within the license period starting with the first day of licensure and end on June 30 of the first odd year. For instance, if you were licensed April 1, 2023 and it expires June 30, 2023 your license renewal timeframe is April 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023. 
    5. CE contact hour training may be in 1 or more courses provided the brochure or agenda describes the content and the number of hours related to 12 hours of pharmacotherapeutics and 12 hours of clinical management. 
    6. The West Virginia Board of Registered Nurses accepts CE contact hours provided by a Board approved CE provider. Examples of Board approved CE providers include:
      • National advanced practice registered nurse continuing education providers (i.e., American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), National Certification Corporation (NCC) and Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
      • National and state nurse association continuing education providers (i.e., American Nurses Association (ANA), West Virginia Nurses Association (WVNA), American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), etc.); and
      • any State Board of Nursing in the US.
